Jean Tanner's strand-feeding dolphins
Submitted by Robert on Fri, 04/16/2010 - 10:56am
Bluffton resident Jean Tanner watched these dolphins strand feed in Stoney Creek. The dolphins herd schools of bait fish into shallow water, then explosively force the fish onto the muddy banks. The dolphins then lie on their sides in the shallows and snap up the fish. Birds get in on the act too and try to steal a few fish. Dolphins in the Lowcountry are the only ones known to have this feeding habit.
